The Brasseurs du Nord, the microbrewery in Blainville that produces Boréale, just got the news that they won two gold medals in the Wheat Ale tastings at the 2013 World Beer Championships.

Boréale 25 and Boréale Blanche were tasted on July 3, during the Wheat Ale Style Tastings held in Chicago by the Beverage Testing Institute (BTI).

Judges gave the new Boréale 25 candied-orange-scented wheat beer 90 points for its “clear golden amber color. Aromas of peach custard pastry and spicy butter-cream on orange cake with a chewy fruity-yet-dry medium-to-full body and a tangy banana, pepper, and spicy carrot cake accented finish. Rich and tasty.”

They rated Boréale Blanche even higher, with 94 points for “bold aromas of lemongrass buttercream, coriander, and exotic spices with zesty, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and a creamy citrus custard, radish and pepper bread finish.”

The award is good recognition for a new ale the brewery launched on May 2 to celebrate 25 years in business.

“The launch of Boréale 25 is an invitation to join us in celebrating 25 years of nice conversation, fun and good times spent together with friends over a great beer,” said Laura Urtnowski, President of Les Brasseurs du Nord that day. “Today, we’re celebrating with our employees as well as with all Quebeckers who love good craft beer, both of whom have contributed to our success. Today, I’m very proud to offer beer-lovers a great-tasting ale that not only reflects our team’s know-how, but also its creativity.”

The history of the student-launched company includes many awards, including a silver medal for its Boréale Dorée in the Special Honey-Maple Lager or Ale category of the 2013 Canadian Brewing Awards in the spring. Boréale Dorée also won gold at a world beer competition last year.

Other important competitions for beer include the U.S. Open, the world beer awards and the world beer cup. The Brasseurs du Nord were not among the 2013 winners for the first; winners for the second won’t be announced until September; and the World Beer Cup takes place next year.
