City councilor Paola Hawa has officially entered the race for mayor of Sainte Anne de Bellevue, during municipal elections, November 3.

According to the Elections Quebec web site, the Director General of Elections of Quebec authorized Hawa’s candidacy, June 20.

The official approval means that Hawa’s team can now officially raise money for her election campaign.

At the moment, she is the only candidate in the running. Incumbent Mayor Francis Deroo has not yet indicated whether or not he will bid for reelection, however several unconfirmed sources said that he told municipal employees, June 26, that he did not plan to run again.

Sainte Anne de Bellevue has been riven by controversy, of late, over the closure of two overpasses alongside westbound highway 40.

In May, former mayor Bill Tierney castigated the civic administration for needlessly closing the spans two years ago, partially cutting off automobile access to the town.

In a telephone interview, Hawa, who ran unsuccessfully for the Coalition pour l’avenir du Québec party during last year’s provincial election, told The Suburban that the overpass debacle is just one of the reasons tha t she decided to run locally.

“It’s more than just the overpasses,” she declared. “It’s the way every issue is handled.”

“That played a huge role in spurring me to run,” Hawa added, “because I believe in transparency—not just words but actions and responsible governance. That is something that is sorely missed in Sainte Anne de Bellevue. We need vision and respect for the citizens.”
