The Société de transport de Laval (STL) has started its smog alert operation for its sixth year.

The smog alert public transit program, which this year began June 1, is an operation where the STL and Environment Canada pair up and try to eliminate as much smog in the metropolitan area as possible.

Every day until Labor Day, Sept. 2, Environment Canada will advise the STL whenever it declares a smog alert. Once notified, STL will then notify Laval residents through its website. Commuters can expect to pay only one dollar for their transportation on those days, rather than the usual three dollars.

“This is STL’s way of promoting and encouraging public transit,” STL spokeswoman Marie-Céline Bourgault said. “It’s also how we do our part to help improve the quality of air within the community.”

The STL didn’t receive any smog alerts last year, or in the operation’s first year in 2008. However, in 2011, the operation was implemented four times, June 8-9, and July 19 and 21.

In 2010, commuters used the service eight times, from July 5-9, and Aug. 31-Sept. 2.

“It really is to promote public transit and reducing the number of vehicles on the road,” Bourgault said. “It’s a good way to encourage people to do something good for the community.”
