For its fifth year, teachers and students took part in the annual Terry Fox run at North Star Academy in Laval, May 24, to raise funds for cancer research.

Despite the rainy weather that day, students and teachers still did their yearly 90-minute walk that started on Samson and followed 92 Avenue up to Souvenir and ended back to their school.

“It went very well,” Domenico Terrone gym teacher at the school and organizer of the walk said. “Police were very impressed with our walk because that day, six other schools were suppose to do the walk, but they all canceled because of the rain, and we were the only school that still did it despite the weather.”

Students began fundraising for the walk two months prior to the event, where they went out to seek pledges. This year, the student body of 90 students raised $750.

Their goal was to surpass last years total amount raised, which was $600. “The whole point was to raise awareness of the walk,” Terrone said.

“While we walked, people would see us, and we would tell them what we were walking for so that they could be aware of the fundraiser.”

The walk began at the school five years ago, Terrone who organized it every year.

At the end of the race, students were given treats and a ceremony was held to give out awards for various academic accomplishments. The school planned to have BBQ but canceled, due to the rain.

“I even obliged teachers to walk,” Terrone said. “It’s not just for the students; I wanted everyone to do it.”
