Work is underway in Sanofi’s distribution centre, which began operations in Kirkland in October, to house a new scientific laboratory there.

The investment will permit the healthcare giant to move its consumer health research from its current location in St. Laurent, later this year, Sanofi spokeswoman Joanne Kennedy told The Suburban in an interview.

“It is one part of a renewed investment of $12 million in Quebec,” she said. “The laboratory will supplement the current activity there, which is focused on packaging and shipping Sanofi products both within Canada and for export.”

“We’re excited about the new lab for our consumer health business, particularly our cosmeceutical business and a flagship product called NeoStrata,” Kennedy explained.

“We’re investing in Kirkland specifically and Quebec in general, because we’re here for the long-term.”
Cosmeceuticals are beauty products such as skin creams, for example, which take advantage of scientific knowledge but are not considered medicine, though they are often marketed directly to physicians such as dermatologists.

The Kirkland facility will bring together all Sanofi’s consumer health products under one roof, the company said in a statement.

“Were proud of our investment in Quebec, and our new building in Kirkland our ongoing renovations there are an important bringing together of our activities,” Kennedy concluded.

Sanofi operates a number of companies. In addition to its consumer health and prescrip- tion drug businesses, it is also a powerhouse in the manufacture of vaccines, rare diseases and animal health.

The company said that it employs more than 1,700 Canadians and invested $122 in research and development in Canada last year.
