Laval Cadet Corps 2649 will be holding its sixth annual spaghetti supper, April 27, to raise money for more activities for the cadets.
The annual supper usually takes place in March every year, but this time had to be pushed to April. The supper will be held at the cadet headquarters at 2100 Blvd. Le Carrefour. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
“The sole purpose of this event is to raise money for the cadet’s activities, as it is ever year,” commanding officer Julie Leger said. “Last year was a success and we’re hoping this year will be too.”
The parents of all the cadets are in charge of organizing events and fundraising, as they are every year. President of the cadets’ parent’s council Bernard Colas states that he hopes to raise at least $4,500 for their annual spaghetti supper.
Last year, the annual supper raised between $4,000 and $5,000.
The cost of the supper varies from age group. Participants aged 11 years and over pay $15, and it costs $5 for children 6-10. Children five and under enter free.
With capacity at about 200-250, people are encouraged to reserve their spots well in advance. There are 70 places remaining, with a few places set aside for last-minute arrivals.
The event will not only have a spaghetti meal but will serve salad, desserts and coffee. There will also be a DJ, a raffle that will raffle off gift certificates to Laval restaurants and one big prize.
The event is sponsored by Pasta Express in Laval. Cadets range in age from 12-18. There are three types of cadets: Air, Land and Sea.
Land cadets learn about survival skills, trees, orientation and nature-related themes. Air cadets learn about piloting and some get to fly small aircrafts. Sea cadets learn more about boats, the water, storms and the necessary tools aboard watercraft.
“People think that the cadets are a stepping stone to the army, but it’s not,” Leger said. “The goal is to build citizens and to encourage them to use good leadership skills, do community work, and to give teenagers something constructive to do.”
Laval Cadet Corps 2649 gives its courses in French, but during summer camps are offered in both French and English.
“It’s a family event,” Leger said of the upcoming dinner, “so we’re expecting to have a lot of fun.”
