BIll 14: “CAQ position still evolving”

West Island CAQuiste Paola Hawa eager to explore party’s stance

By Robert Frank
When it comes to the Coalition pour l’avenir du Québec’s
final position Bill 14, Sainte Anne de Bellevue municipal councilor Paola Hawa
told The Suburban in an interview
that she forsees that “there is still some fine tuning that could take place.”
“I’m definitely pleased with our leadership’s position on
municipalities and on military families,” enthused Hawa, who ran unsuccessfully
on the West Island for the CAQ during last year’s provincial election.
“As a businessman who has worked on the international level
[CAQ leader François Legault] recognizes that certain jobs require the
incumbent to be bilingual, but does that mean that the person who works on the
warehouse floor needs to be bilingual?” she asked.
During the past two weeks, many elected Quebec Liberal Party
representatives have spoken out unequivocally against Bill 14. Hawa said that
CAQ’s ultimate stance remains to be seen, and that she is looking forward to
discussing it with fellow delegates during CAQ’s upcoming province-wide confab
next week in Boucherville, March 23-24.
“Our position is still evolving,” she underscored. “There
will be a lot of sharing of ideas and opinions with my colleagues. We will
examining where we are going, in what direction, and determine whether this is
our final position, or if it can be massaged a bit.”
Hawa echoed the analysis that has been expressed by many
Liberal legislators during the past two weeks, that the Parti québécois is
trying to divide Quebecers in order to achieve its political objectives.
“We had a modus
vivendi
before this,” she explained. “Nobody was happy with the situation,
but nobody was angry. This is unnecessarily bringing forward a chicane. For what purpose, really?”
“Look at our tax rates, look at our debt level: Wouldn’t it
be better instead to be discussing something that affects our day-to-day,
in-our-pocket livelihood?” Hawa concluded.
