Laval police are urging citizens to be
cautious about flaunting their smartphones or iPods, after two robberies last
week.

“On Sept 3, a teenager was attacked
from behind in Parc du sablon, on 4th avenue, in Chomedey,” said police
spokeswoman Const. Nathalie Lorrain.

“There were four attackers—four men
and a woman, all of whom appeared to
be of middle eastern origin.”

“They pushed the young man to the
ground and tried to steal his iPod. The
suspects, who appeared to be in their late teens or early twenties, then fled in
a gray minivan.”

“Then, on Sept. 7, around 7:30 p.m.,
two black suspects aged about 20 threatened two people in Parc des prairies in
Laval des Rapides,” Const. Lorrain continued.

“They showed them what was probably a fake gun and demanded their backpack and cellular phones, which they
handed over. The suspects then fled on
foot.”

“One of the suspects had a tattoo on
his right arm with the number 1996,”
she added, “and both wore hoodies and
covered their faces with scarves.”

Const. Lorrain said that there had been a spate of these attacks earlier this
year at bus stops and in Metro stations
and speculated that they might have
begun to recur with the start of the new
school year.

“Members of the public should be
careful not display these devices conspicuously, “ she said. “Don’t keep them
in your hand or show that you have it on
you, because it can invite these sorts of
attacks.”

She urged members of the public who
might be able to help identify the perpetrators to call the Laval police hotline
[450] 662-INFO (662-4636), and said
that people can leave tips anonymously,
if they wish.
