Police and firefighters were called to Signa Plus at 975 Bergar, Sept. 11, after staff called 911 at 1:20 a.m. to report that three cars belonging to employees of the Chomedey traffic-control signmaker had been set on fire, Laval police spokesman Const. Franco di Genova told The Suburban.

“Police officers who arrived on the scene discovered certain elements which confirmed that this was a criminally set fire,” he said, adding that the fires were so big that high-pressure hoses had to be deployed after firefighters’ extinguishers proved insufficient to douse the blaze.

He confirmed that Laval police plan to exchange notes with their Montreal counterparts, who are investigating a similar suspicious automobile fire discovered soon afterward.

“Our detectives will be calling up Montreal police and comparing what we have,” Const. di Genova said. “It remains to be seen whether both fires are related.”

He added that at this point in the investigation, he is unable to say whether the suspected crimes might be related to recent construction industry tensions or organized criminal activety.

“Investigators who specialize in criminal fires will examine evidence that they find suspicious and seize security video camera recordings,” he explained. “They will talk to the owners [of Signa Plus] to find out whether anyone had been fired during the past few months or threatened them.”
